UPDATES FROM OUR FRIENDS AT AEAAC
Below are some of the highlights from their latest newsletter AEAAC Council Connector:
Message 01 – The Safe Spaces Initiative
The Safe Spaces Initiative is more than just a shelter; it’s a beacon of hope for older adults like Eleanor. It provides safety, restores dignity, and offers a path to a better future.
Safe Spaces: A Lifeline for older adults in Need
Elea, a 79-year-old retired nurse from rural Alberta, found herself in a challenging situation when her adult grandson moved in after losing his job. Initially, she welcomed the companionship, but over time, his behavior changed. He began controlling her finances, isolating her from friends, and exhibiting verbal aggression.
Feeling trapped and unsure where to turn, Elea confided in her family doctor, who connected her with an elder abuse case manager. Through this support, she learned about the Safe Spaces Initiative—a program offering temporary housing and comprehensive services for older adults facing abuse.
With the program’s assistance, Elea relocated to a safe space where she received counseling, legal advice, and healthcare services. The supportive environment allowed her to regain confidence and plan her next steps without fear.
Spread the Word: If you or someone you know is experiencing elder abuse, help is available. Learn more about the Safe Spaces Initiative and how it can make a difference: albertaelderabuse.
Let’s work together to ensure every senior lives with dignity and respect.
Message 02 – June marks National Indigenous History Month
As we observe National Indigenous history throughout the month and WEAAD on June 15, this is a meaningful time to reflect on the important role Indigenous Elders hold in our communities, to recognize the unique challenges they may face while we address potential vulnerabilities and elder abuse risk.
As we celebrate the rich cultures, histories, and contributions of First Nations, Inuit, and Métis Peoples, let’s also honour the wisdom of Elders and commit to protecting their dignity, safety, and well-being — today and every day.
