National Seniors Safety Week

On Thursday, November 7, 2024, we hosted our National Seniors Safety Week event here at our centre.  It was a fantastic day with our guest speakers once again sharing some valuable information with us!

INVESTMENT SCAMS

First up was Hilary McMeekin, from the Alberta Securities Commission who educated us on common types of investment scams in Alberta and red flags to watch for. She walked us through common scams, the importance of doing our research thoroughly and making sure individuals or platforms offering investments are registered with the provincial securities commission before investing.  One key message was our friends and family members are often the ones who share a “great investment opportunity” with us, and it is often these investment scams that we fall for.

EDMONTON POLICE SERVICE

Constable Amanda Trenchard gave an informative presentation on crime prevention and safety tips.  She shared stories of scams she had seen and reminded us that the scammers treat this as a job and they are very good at it.  She also had some fantastic resources about being safe in our home and neighborhood.

CURRENT TRENDS

Next up was James MacDonald, the Senior Manager of Corporate Security at Servus Credit Union.  He updated us about the current trends in the ever-changing landscape of fraud.  He also walked us through simple tips to take to avoid becoming a victim of a scam.  His key message was that bank staff are trained to watch for potential victims and to do their best to ask questions.  If you want to take out a large sum of money and the tellers are asking you lots of questions, it is simply to make sure you are not being victimized.

ST JOHN AMBULANCE

We ended our event with St John Ambulance staff who gave a fun and engaging presentation on how to recognize the signs of someone in distress, what to do and the best part…they showed us how to use an AED machine
