Guest Speaker Night: “Insurance, Insanity & Insight: Tales from the Road”

Presented by Rob Stevenson, from Armour Insurance

This month’s Men’s Shed meeting brings a guest speaker who promises to make insurance anything but boring. Join us for an evening with Armour Insurance, as they present Insurance, Insanity & Insight: Tales from the Road—a lighthearted, informative session designed especially for older adults.

Here’s what’s on the agenda:

“What’s the Weirdest Thing You’ve Ever Claimed?”
We’ll kick things off with a few laughs. AArmour will share some great stories of some of the more interesting claims they have dealt with then feel free to jump in with a few stories of your own.

“The Alberta Auto Shuffle”
Ever feel like auto insurance in Alberta is a game of musical chairs? You’re not alone.  Rob will give us a simple, jargon-free look at the current state of auto insurance in the province. He will also touch on how rates are set, what AIRB does, and how government decisions affect what we pay—without diving too deep into politics. Expect metaphors, not spreadsheets.

“Mythbusters: Insurance Edition”
Time to separate fact from fiction. Armour will debunk common myths like “red cars cost more to insure” and “you don’t need tenant insurance if you rent.” They’ll also share a few practical tips that could save you money—like asking about senior discounts, bundling policies, and reviewing your coverage regularly.

“Insurance Companies vs. Real Life”
We’ve all had moments where the fine print didn’t match reality. This segment highlights some of the more absurd or confusing parts of insurance policies, with real-life examples that will make you shake your head.

Wrap-Up: “What I Wish I Knew Sooner”
To close, Armour will offer a handful of practical tips tailored for seniors navigating the insurance world. Topics include:

  • What to review in your policy each year
  • How to document valuables for claims
  • Questions to ask your broker before renewing
  • Ways to simplify your coverage without losing protection

There’ll be time for questions, stories, and sharing wisdom from the group. Whether you’ve had your fair share of insurance headaches or just want to learn something new, this session is for you
