Most of us have found ourselves having caught a foot, a near fall, an “ouch, that hurt…” or like Sandra Bullock attempting to navigate high heels in Miss Congeniality movie, tripping and stumbling like Bambi. Losing one’s balance often happens so quickly, we don’t even realize it until we’re on the ground.
Here are some tips to help improve your balance
- Slow down, especially if you’re on uneven ground or if it’s dark.
- Stay organized. If you’re working out at home, keep the area tidy so you don’t trip on your equipment.
- Pay attention to your environment. Know what’s around you. Especially if you have a little one, they can be sneaky.
- Get your vision checked. Regular visits to the eye doctor are always a good idea.
- Try exercises to improve your balance
- Balance on one leg (be sure to alternate), once you feel confident doing this with your eyes open, try closing your eyes. Know your environment, in case you stumble
- Walking or hiking on uneven ground helps improve balance
- Wide squats and lunges- help to engage your core
- Walk heel to toe – forward and backward
- Incorporate strength training into your workout
- Use plyometric exercises to improve your sense of self
- Try doing some explosive actions, like jumping up the stairs (with a railing for support)
