Active Aging Series Offers Community Updates
On Thursday, September 12, 2024, we held an event as part of our Active Aging Series called A Conversation With Community Leaders. We were joined by City Councillor Andrew Knack, MLA Brooks Arcand Paul, and WSAC Executive Director Dr. Haidong Liang, who shared some fantastic information with our members.
LRT Construction and Traffic Updates
First up was Councillor Andrew Knack. Andrew gave an update on the ongoing LRT construction led by Marigold. He advised that they have done a really good job at providing regular LRT updates and he encouraged members who want to stay informed, to sign up for Marigold’s e-newsletter. Councillor Knack also provides regular updates through his e-newsletter, and we encourage everyone to sign up for his newsletter by visiting his website.
Andrew also advised that City Council understands the frustrations caused by traffic disruptions and has asked Marigold to work 24-hour shifts in certain areas to speed up progress. Attendees were provided with LRT information booklets. We have some extra copies at our front desk but Andrew advised if you have any questions, you can contact his office
Lewis Farms Facility Development
He also discussed the new Lewis Farms facility, which will include a park area, a library, and a pool. It will be located at 87 Ave and 220 St. Although the project is still a couple of years away, Andrew is sharing drone photos on his Facebook page every month to show the progress.
Other Projects: Coronation and Lewis Estates
It was also interesting to hear that most city projects are completed on time and within budget and that we can visit the City of Edmonton’s website to see what projects are happening here in Edmonton, their status and if they are staying budget.
Two other major projects were highlighted. The Coronation facility is expected to open in 2026, and the Lewis Estates facility is scheduled for completion in 2028. These projects will add valuable amenities to the west end of the city.
Seniors’ ETS Fares and the Arc Card
Transit was another important topic that was discussed. Councillor Knack explained how the new Arc card helps collect better data on where people are getting on and off buses, which will help the city provide better service. There are also new options for seniors’ transit fares, and more information is available on the City of Edmonton website
Improved Safety on Public Transit
He also talked about efforts to make public transit safer. Two years ago, the number of peace officers was doubled, and now Edmonton Police Service officers regularly ride the buses. This has led to fewer serious incidents on transit, which makes riding safer for everyone.
On-Demand Transit Service
For more flexible transit, Edmonton offers an on-demand service that doesn’t require a smartphone or computer. You can request rides and track buses online. This service brings buses closer to where you live and takes you to a major transit hub and back again. Seniors-specific routes are available seven days a week, so make sure to check the hours of operation.
Changes to Subsidies and Leisure Program
Changes have also been made to how the City of Edmonton offers subsidies. There is now a tiered system to better help low-income residents, and these subsidies also apply to the City’s Leisure Program. Both programs have the same income cut-offs, making it easier to qualify.
Overall, it was a presentation full of useful information about transit, new developments like Lewis Farms, and city projects. We thank Councillor Knack, for being part of our event and for his contributions to the City of Edmonton.
