The Westend Seniors Activity Centre is here to help!

HOW CAN OUR SOCIAL WORKER PROVIDE ASSISTANCE

Social workers can help older adults in many important ways. Here are some of the main things they do:

Understanding Your Needs:

  • Our Social Worker will meet with you (and your family members) to find out what you services you need and she will help you to make a plan

Finding Resources:

  • Our Social Worker can also help you to connect with services like home repair providers, home care assistance, and transportation options.  She can also tell you about the Westend Seniors Activity Centre’s Frozen Meal Program.

Emotional Support:

  • Sometimes we just need someone to talk to.  Our Social Worker can provide you with counseling and support for feelings things like loneliness, grief counseling and more.

Health Education:

  • Did you know that it is estimated that over 50% of seniors who have to go to an emergency room are diagnosed as being malnourished?  If you or someone you know is struggling with healthy living, our Social Worker can provide resources and connections to assist with that.

Crisis Help:

  • If you are having a medical emergency, it is always best to call 911.
  • For other emergencies, our Social Worker can provide help in emergencies, like abuse or sudden health problems.

Support for Caregivers:

  • Often caregivers need resources.  Our Social Worker can help friends or family members who are taking care of older adults, by providing information on things like respite care, funding etc.

Housing Help:

  • We all know navigating the system can be difficult, especially when it comes to seniors housing.  Our Social Worker can explore the different options available and find the right place to live, whether it’s you staying at home or moving to a care facility.

Financial and Legal Help:

  • Often, seniors are not collecting all of the benefits they are entitled to.  Our Social Worker can help you with reviewing your benefits to make sure you are receiving everything you are eligible for.  She can also provide you with resources for managing money and finding legal assistance, writing your Will, etc.

Social Activities:

  • Want to connect with others?  Maybe you are interested in taking a class or learning something new.  Our Social Work can work with you to find programs and activities to help you or someone you know stay socially active and engaged.
