Retracing History: Our Victoria Trail Outing
On June 24, 2026, our members embarked on a fantastic outing to the historic Victoria Trail, beautifully organized by our dedicated Travel Trips Committee.
It was a perfect day filled with rich history, wonderful company, and beautiful weather.
Our journey was brought to life by the incredible storytelling and deep knowledge of two members from The Victoria Home Guard Historical Society, Elaine Breadon and Don Klym.

Beyond sharing her fascinating historical anecdotes, Elaine was kind enough to bake and share a batch of delicious cookies with us during the trip.
Today, we are delighted to share that very recipe with all of you, along with the charming story behind them— all courtesy of our wonderful friends at the Victoria Home Guard Historical Society.
This is a lovely recipe that uses simple ingredients. Ekateryna could use poppy seeds from her garden, cream, eggs and butter from the farm and even home-grown wheat flour. The Hruschaks never complained about anything in Canada. They had freedom. Betty remembers her Gido Nikola saying, “My house in the Ukraine had ears”. Betty explained, “You had to be careful what you said. The walls had ears, so they were always afraid that someone was listening. They were not free in Ukraine like in Canada.
Baba’s Poppy Seed Cookies
- 1 cup butter
- 1 cup sugar
- 2 tbsp cream
- 2 eggs, beaten
- 1/4 tsp soda
- 3 cups flour (approx.)
- 1/2 cup poppy seeds
Method: Cream the butter and sugar, blend in cream and eggs. Add soda, flour and poppy seeds. Roll out 1/4 “ thick and cut out with a cookie cutter. Bake at 350° 8-10 minutes.
