Thriving Solo: Financial Planning For Single Women

This series is designed to support single women over 50 who want clarity, confidence, and practical guidance as they plan for the next stage of life. Each session tackles a different part of financial wellbeing, from retirement income and debt stress to home equity options and government benefits, with presenters who understand the realities women face as they age.

Women in their 50s, 60s, and beyond often navigate financial decisions alone. Many have experienced career interruptions, caregiving responsibilities, rising living costs, or unexpected life changes. This series brings together trusted experts who explain options in plain language, reduce confusion, and help participants make informed choices that support independence, stability, and long‑term comfort.

Across the three sessions, participants will learn how to strengthen their financial literacy, reduce stress, plan for longevity, and build a future that reflects their values and goals.

Many single women enter retirement with debt, often due to widowhood, divorce, caregiving interruptions, or rising costs. This session explains how debt impacts CPP, OAS, pensions, and monthly stability, and outlines the full range of legitimate options available to reduce or eliminate financial strain. Sandra and Marcie will provide clear explanations of consolidation, restructuring, consumer proposals, and repayment plans, including realistic timelines and outcomes. The focus is on dignity, independence, and confidential support.

Your home can be more than a place to live; it may also provide financial flexibility in retirement. Whether you’re looking to make your home safer and more comfortable or free up monthly cash flow by reducing existing debt, your home equity may help fund the lifestyle you want. In this session, Michelle Coates of Verico Compass Mortgage Group will walk you through how a reverse mortgage can support your independence, your comfort, and your long‑term financial confidence. You’ll learn how this tool works, who it’s designed for, and how it can create breathing room in your budget without forcing you to leave the home you love.

Understanding Your Retirement Benefits
Presented by Hakima Abdessemed, Service Canada, Government of Canada

Understanding your retirement benefits starts with knowing how Canada Pension Plan (CPP) and Old Age Security (OAS) work together to support you in later life. They form the foundation of most Canadians’ retirement income. Hakima will provide attendees with a better understanding of the public pension and how it can help with their retirement planning.

Home Equity & Mortgages After 50: Understanding Your Options
Presented by Elena Russell, Fast Track Mortgages

Your home is one of your biggest financial assets, and the choices you make after 50 can shape your retirement income and lifestyle. This session offers a practical look at renewing or refinancing a mortgage later in life, what lenders consider when you’re retired or nearing retirement, and the differences between fixed and variable rates. We’ll also cover options for single women and ways to use home equity without relying solely on reverse mortgages. You’ll explore whether staying, renovating, downsizing, or moving makes sense for your situation, how housing costs affect retirement income, and how tools like refinancing, home‑equity lines of credit, and traditional mortgages fit into a retirement plan
