Get Ready for Winter: Plan Ahead for Snow Removal
We all know how challenging Edmonton winters can be, especially when heavy snow and ice make it difficult or unsafe to get around.
The City of Edmonton’s Assisted Snow Removal Pilot Program ended in April 2026, so it is important to make other arrangements before winter arrives.
Plan ahead and arrange snow removal
There are several options available to help you keep your property safe and accessible:
WE Seniors Outreach – Seniors Home Supports
Our Outreach Team can provide referrals to screened snow-removal service providers through the Seniors Home Supports Program. You can contact our Outreach Team for information about providers in your area. The referral is free, although you are responsible for paying the service provider.
Community organizations and Snow Angels
Some community leagues and neighbourhood groups may have volunteers who can help with snow and ice removal. The City also promotes its Snow Angel program, which connects neighbours who need help with those willing to lend a hand. Here is the link https://snowangelscanada.ca/
Financial help for low-income seniors
If you are 65 or older and have a low income, you may qualify for the Government of Alberta’s Special Needs Assistance for Seniors (SNA). Snow removal is an eligible expense under the program.
To qualify, you must meet the program’s age, residency and financial requirements and have completed an Alberta Seniors Financial Assistance application.
Special Needs Assistance for Seniors – Alberta
How does the Special Needs Assistance process work?
Make sure you have completed the Alberta Seniors Financial Assistance application. You only need to complete the Seniors Financial Assistance application once.
Arrange your snow-removal service with a provider.
Keep your receipts. Receipts need to identify the senior, the service provider, the service provided, the date, hours, hourly cost and total cost.
Submit your claim through your MyAlberta Seniors Account or by submitting the required documents to the Special Needs Assistance for Seniors program.
Important: For a first-time request for snow removal, a medical note from a health professional is generally required to confirm that a health or mobility condition prevents you from doing the work yourself. However, a medical note is not required for former AISH recipients or for seniors aged 80 or older.
Don’t wait for the first snowfall!
Snow-removal companies can become very busy once winter arrives. Be proactive and arrange your snow removal before the snow starts. Having a plan in place can help prevent falls, reduce stress and ensure that your walkways remain safe throughout the winter.
If you need assistance finding snow-removal resources, please contact our Outreach Team. We are happy to help you explore your options.
