Outreach Messages – Medical Alert Devices

Medical Alert and Safety Pendants
We recently received an inquiry about medical alert/safety pendant systems, and we wanted to share this helpful information more widely. These devices can provide peace of mind by allowing seniors to quickly call for help in an emergency, at home or while out in the community.
If you or someone you care for needs help finding community resources or navigating next steps, please feel free to reach out to our Outreach team. We’re here to walk alongside you.
What is a Medical Alert System?
Medical alert systems typically include a wearable pendant or wrist device with a button that connects the senior to 24/7 emergency support. Some systems also offer fall detection, GPS tracking, and mobile options for use outside the home.
The following are examples of commonly used medical alert providers serving Edmonton and Alberta. Listings does not imply endorsement. Seniors are encouraged to contact providers directly to find the best fit for their needs and budget:
- Holo Alert, 1 888 445-0192 – Canadian-based provider offering in-home and mobile medical alert options
- Priority Care Call, 1866 344-6009 – 24/7 monitored medical alert systems with fall detection
- TELUS LivingWell Companion – 1 888 505-8008, In-home and on-the-go safety devices
- Lifeline – 1 866-916-8057, Medical alert service provider
While Alberta does not currently have a universal program that fully covers medical alert systems, there may be financial supports available for low-income seniors, including:
- Special Needs Assistance for Seniors (SNA): This program provides financial assistance to low-income seniors for medical alarms with a funding maximum of $24.00 per month
- MedicAlert Foundation Canada (IDEA Program): Offers a subsidy for MedicAlert services, covering up to 100% of the cost for two years for eligible individuals.
- Non-Insured Health Benefits (NIHB): Provides coverage for eligible First Nations and Inuit individuals.
- Veterans Affairs Canada: Veterans may be eligible for coverage for safety monitoring systems.
- Private Insurance & Health Spending Accounts: Many personal health insurance plans cover a portion of medical alert system
Useful Tips
When talking to a provider
- Ask if the system includes 24/7 monitoring
- Check whether fall detection is available
- Ask about monthly costs, contracts, and cancellation policies
- Consider whether the senior needs in-home only or mobile coverage
