A Special Slice of History Comes Home to WE Seniors

History came full circle at WE Seniors this summer thanks to a wonderful visit from the Butler family!

Florence and George Butler were original members of our organization, staying with us through the early days of our journey that began all the way back in 1978. When our doors first opened as the Edmonton Self Starters Organization (ESSO), members gathered at the Jasper Place Annex Building on 163rd Street.

While our name and space have evolved over the decades, the memory of those early days remains strong—and now, a tangible piece of that legacy is back where it belongs.

The Butlers’ youngest daughter, Karen, along with their granddaughter, Danaca, dropped by to deliver a truly special gift: the original 1978 ESSO sign. The sign had been safely housed for years at the Butler family cabin in Ross Haven. While doing some recent decluttering, the family uncovered the keepsake and knew instantly that its true home was with us.

We were absolutely thrilled to accept this unique piece of our shared heritage. A massive thank you to the Butler family for preserving our history and bringing it home. Keep an eye out for the sign, which will soon be proudly displayed for all our members to enjoy!

Quick Reminder: Why Scanning In at the Desk Helps Keep Us All Safe & Covered!

We love seeing our vibrant community filling the building every day! Whether you are here for a morning fitness class, a game of cards, or just catching up over coffee, your presence is what makes our center so special.

To help us keep things running smoothly, we want to gently remind everyone, including our longtime senior members, to please sign in or scan your badge at the front desk every single time you enter the building.

We know it can feel like an unnecessary extra step, especially if our front desk staff already knows you by name! However, stopping by the desk for that quick check-in serves three vital purposes:

  • Emergency Safety & Headcounts: If an alarm sounds or an emergency evacuation occurs, emergency responders rely on our front desk log to know who is in the building. A quick check-in ensures we can account for you and keep you safe if the unexpected happens.
  • Accurate Financial Reconciliation: Front desk sign-ins allow our team to accurately match daily attendance with our end-of-day and end-of-month payment reports. This keeps our operational funding transparent, accurate, and aligned with the programs we offer.
  • Legal & Insurance Protection: In the event of an accidental slip, fall, or injury while on site, official check-in logs provide immediate proof that you were registered for your session and physically present in the facility. This documentation is critical for processing any necessary incident reports or insurance coverage on your behalf.

Checking in takes less than ten seconds, but it makes a world of difference in keeping our facility safe, organized, and legally secure for everyone.

Next time you walk through the doors, stop by, say hello, and scan in! We truly appreciate your cooperation in helping us maintain a safe and welcoming space for our entire community.
