MAVIES MITTEN TREE CELEBRATION

On December 10th, 2025, our centre held the 27th annual Mavie’s Mitten Tree celebration. This is a long‑running tradition that brings together seniors, students, volunteers, and our community partners to share a warm afternoon and support people who need winter clothing.

In the weeks before the event, our team and volunteers set up the hall, decorated the tree, and made sure everything was ready. The knitting volunteers had also been working all year, creating hundreds of handmade mittens, toques, scarves, and socks. On event day, they sorted all the items so they could be delivered to local organizations that help people feeling the winter without enough warm clothing.

When the doors opened, seniors from our centre welcomed students from Sifton Elementary school. Their energy added a lot of life to the room, and it was clear how much both groups enjoyed being together. Culinary students from Jasper Place High School served a full turkey dinner to everyone. Our staff moved around the room, chatting with guests and helping the volunteers keep everything running smoothly.

A special moment came when Mavie, who is now 103 years old and the inspiration behind the event, was brought to the Mitten Tree. She handed out mittens to the Sifton students one pair at a time. It was a simple but meaningful moment that showed why this tradition has lasted so long. Santa also made an appearance, giving treat bags to the kids and adding some fun to the afternoon.

Throughout the event, the Westend Singers performed holiday songs, creating a warm and relaxed atmosphere.

This event continues each year thanks to the hard work of volunteers and the support of sponsors like Servus Credit Union. Their contributions help WSAC bring people together and support the community in a practical, caring way.

When the afternoon wrapped up, what stayed with people was the sense of connection — sharing food, music, and kindness across generations.
