Do you enjoy soaking your pedicured feet? Did you know that soaking your pedicured feet is discouraged, but you may be wondering why?

I really enjoyed reading an 2021 article from diabetes Canada called feet first. Although it was written in 2021 I believe that the topic is still very relevant. The question that sticks out to me the most is  “I’m wondering why soaking your feet and pedicures are discouraged. If your [blood glucose] numbers are good and steady, why is this such a big no-no? – Karen Greiter,”

This is a topic that has not been talked about enough. Regular salons often will soak your feet in a tub. The only benefit to soaking the feet is that it feels good. Soaking the feet causes your skin to dry out.  Dry skin can lead to callus build up and potentially leading to cracks in the skin. These cracks are open wounds that are susceptible to infection. An infection can lead to serious complications for individuals with diabetes.

Diabetic pedicures that are performed with Medi Pedi Edmonton are done as dry pedicures. We will clean your feet but we do not soak your feet in a tub of water. We also have pre-empt sanitization certification which certifies that we are using the best cleaning and sanitization techniques for the safety of our customers.

Did you know that up to 25% of all diabetics will eventually have an amputation; Improper cleaning and lack of education from pedicurists are no doubt a large part of the reason for this horrible statistic. The Salon industry is unfortunately unregulated, meaning there is no one holding these establishments accountable for their staff education.  Medi Pedi Edmonton ensures that each technician is a Professionally Certified Pedicurist with Advanced Certification. Our pedicures take an hour and a half as we perform skin and nail care from the knee to tip of toe.

Our pedicures begin with a conversation about your feet and any current health conditions the client may have. We then go on to inspect the nails and feet. We are looking for anything irregular such as warts, fungus, nail fungus, cracks, ulcers, etc, anything that can cause an issue for the client. This gives us a chance to educate on how these irregularities got there, how we can treat them and whether or not they should be referred to their family physician. Our client’s health and safety are our top priorities.
