Thank you to everyone who participated in our WESeniors Amazing Race & Challenge!

We started our days bright an early with participants coming to the centre to pick up their Amazing Day Passport, their map with the different routes and getting tips from our staff!

Participants had 3 different maps to follow.  Our staff headed north and made our way around the race to capture our business partners and participants throughout the day.  Our north stops included Estate Connection Law Firm (who had a fun game of legal trivia!), Home Care Assistance Edmonton whose team had treats and “Brain games” for everyone and Pharmasave Westmount who had a fun game of beanbag toss AND fresh popcorn for everyone!

We followed the map around the south leg of the race and it was fantastic to see all of our participants having so much fun!

Nurse Next Door on Gateway Blvd had a fun ball toss game ready. Their office looked gorgeous with all their signature hot pink! They even had hot pink pens and chocolate for us!  Our good friends at Drive Happiness had a fantastic welcome table set up and a cute sidewalk chalk message to greet everyone who came to play their dart game!  Our friends at Revera Riverbend made use of their gorgeous green space and had lawn darts all set up for the participants to play!

Amy from Rivera Riverbend was handing out some much appreciated cold water, chips and some fun fold up tote bags that we used to carry our goodies along the way!  All of the businesses had some door prizes up for grabs AND were giving away bling like gift bags, cups and other fun goodies!  Co owner Marcia Stanford of Stanford Hearing had a nice greeting for everyone who came to visit them at their office in Windermere!

We were fortunate to have a few businesses near by so lots of the participants left the west end leg of the race until the end of their day!  Wildrose Seniors Residence here in Terra Losa had some VERY tasty cookies for all of us as we played horseshoes.  Cura Physical Therapies had a super fun event…people took a balance test and then played a game of “pin the tail on the donkey”!  They also had some fun loot bags for everyone who came to their location.

Our good friends and WSAC wine tasting event sponsors Aligra Wine And Spirits had a fun game of beer pong going on in their gorgeous store in West Edmonton Mall! Plus they were giving away some fun Kraken Rum glasses and super cute summer tote bags!  They even have 2 parking spots outside their store so that made it super easy for everyone to visit them along the race route!  Benjamin Moore’s The Brilliant Brush had a great fishing game for everyone to try AND had snacks and beverages for everyone too!

We celebrated the end of the day with a free BBQ for all of our participants.  Chef Stu manned our new bbq grill cooking up polish sausage and hot dogs and volunteers were on hand to help serve beverage and chips to everyone.  We had 3 of our sponsors…Scotia Bank, Driving Miss Daisy West Edmonton and Servus Credit Union Westgate branch all hosting their games in our WSAC parking lot.  Dominic Li and Miranda OBrien of Scotia Bank win the award for most creative game…poker trivia!! Players were given 5 poker chips and then they would ask participants a banking trivia question. The players could then bid up to 5 chips on whether they knew the answer! How fun is that!

We invited all of our mayoral and city councillors to attend our amazing race and challenge.  Amarjeet Sohi, Michael Osry, Kim Krushell, Diana Steele and Cheryl Watson all came to our centre and met with our Executive Director Dr. Haidong Liang to hear about issues facing seniors here in Edmonton.

Everyone who registered had the option of participating in day 1, day 2 or both days of our Amazing Race.  People arrived bright and early with City of Edmonton Councilior Andrew Knack and his parents arriving in his newly decorated car….all ready to spend the day participating in our race!  WSAC Staff member Thomas was on hand to help one of our participants by showing her how to use her GPS to find the locations on our day 2 map!

Local realtor Jody Lambertus, a regular :Toonie Talk” presenter here at our centre had a photobooth at her office.  River Ridge by Revera had a ring toss game and started our morning off nicely with some tasty cookies!

The last stop in the race was at Revolution Cycle here in Edmonton’s west end where participants could try riding an E-Bike.  What a fun time!  We ended day 2 with another free bbq and then staff member Thomas got a head start on collecting passports and calculating points!

I would like to thank all the staff that worked so hard to put together the Amazing Race – what a great way to start getting back to, and feeling, NORMAL again.

The whole event was super well planned which gave everyone multiple options to participate.  My schedule wouldn’t allow me to fit in two full days however, I wanted to take part and I was able to plan a fun and informative day with the great tools I was given.

I wasn’t really interested in competing or winning just, having fun.  And fun I did have:  I visited some new businesses, some old friends and updated my knowledge of one business that had experienced changes.  A delicious Barbeque and interesting conversation with other WSAC members and meeting candidates for the upcoming City Election pleasantly finished my day.

Thank you WSAC!
