Old Age Security (OAS) – What You Need to Know
The Old Age Security program helps provide income support to older Canadians.
Types of benefits:
- OAS Pension: For people 65+ who meet residency requirements
- Guaranteed Income Supplement (GIS): Extra monthly support for lower-income seniors
- Allowance: For individuals aged 60–64 whose spouse/partner receives GIS, or for widows/widowers
- Allowance for the Survivor: For individuals aged 60–64 who have lost a spouse or partner
- Applying online is the easiest option
Through your My Service Canada Account, you can:
- Apply for OAS, GIS, and other benefits
- Upload and view documents
- Update your personal information
- Access your tax slips
Do you need to apply?
- Some people are automatically enrolled and will receive a letter from Service Canada around age 64
- If you receive this letter, you may not need to apply (unless you choose to delay your pension)
- If you don’t receive a letter, it’s important to apply so you don’t miss out on payments
- In some cases, you may be able to receive retroactive payments
- Can you delay your pension?
Yes, you can delay your OAS up to age 70
Your monthly payment will increase the longer you wait. If you qualify for GIS, delaying may not be the best option.
A friendly reminder
- Filing your income taxes each year is very important (deadline: April 30, 2026)
- Your benefits are reviewed based on your tax return
- Not filing taxes could affect your GIS payments
- If you’re unsure where to start or just need a bit of help, please reach out. We’re here to support you every step of the way.
