WE SENIORS MEN’S SHED
In February 2025, we opened our shed at the Westend Seniors Activity Centre. Our goal is like many sheds, to provide men with a place that they can connect with other men, create friendships and host fun activities where they can socialize
WHAT WE DO
WE Seniors’ Men’s Shed is a place for men to meet, learn, and belong. Drop in, roll up your sleeves, and join other local men for projects, conversation, and a laugh. Our weekly schedule normally consists of:
- Playing pool and cards in the WE Seniors’ games room
- Listening to a guest speaker who does educational presentations on topics we know guys are interested in
- Heading out to do an activity here in Edmonton or the surrounding area
- Working on projects in the WE Seniors workshop
There’s no pressure, no tests — just practical work and good company.
HISTORY OF MEN’S SHEDS
Men’s Sheds started in Australia in the 1990s and spread around the world. The idea caught on because it helped men who felt isolated after retirement find purpose and company. Today, there are thousands of Sheds in many countries, and Canada has been growing its network since 2011.
WHY IT MATTERS
Being part of a Men’s Shed helps in real ways:
- Better mood — regular company cuts down loneliness and stress.
- Move more — projects and gardening keep you active.
- Keep your mind sharp — learning and hands-on work stimulate the brain.
- Feel useful — building or helping others gives you purpose.
- Health talk — we share info on things like prostate checks and staying well.
- Less isolation — steady friendships mean you’re not on your own.
- Healthy habits — members swap tips on food, exercise, and routines.
- Stay steady on your feet — practical work helps balance and strength.
- Manage long-term health — the group supports men dealing with chronic conditions.
- Keep talking — regular social time helps men with hearing or communication issues stay connected.
LADIES – DO YOU HAVE A MAN IN YOUR LIFE WHO NEEDS CONNECTION?
Many wives, daughters, and granddaughters notice when the men they love are quieter or spending too much time at home. WE Seniors’ Men’s Shed is a straightforward, welcoming place that helps men get out, do things, and meet other men. Please tell the men in your life about the Shed. Invite him to a drop-in, bring him along, or contact us, and we’ll answer any questions. A short visit can make a big difference
