Valley Line LRT Update
Did you know that Edmonton is home to not one, but two types of Light Rail Transit (LRT) systems? That’s right! Whether you’re hailing a ride on high-floor or low-floor LRTs, our city is moving forward on the rails of innovation. As Edmonton continues to grow, the low-floor LRT is paving the way to make public transit more accessible, efficient, and integrated into our vibrant communities.
Introducing the Valley Line: Edmonton’s first low-floor LRT system, designed with accessibility and urban integration at its core. Forget the raised platforms of the high-floor trains; the Valley Line allows for smooth street-level boarding. This means everyone, including those with mobility aids, strollers, and bicycles, can hop on and off with ease.
So, what makes the Valley Line stand out?
- Gentle ramps for easy, inclusive access
- Barrier-free pedestrian crossings
- Slower train speeds in busy areas for enhanced safety
Onboard, you’ll love the spacious interiors featuring:
- Wide aisles and clear sightlines
- Dedicated spots for mobility aids
- Convenient areas for strollers and bikes near the doors
- Door status indicators (green means go, red means stop)
- Accessibility buttons to extend door opening time for easy boarding
- Emergency touch strips and intercoms for immediate help
- Security cameras for a safer ride

The Valley Line West is on a mission to connect downtown to Lewis Farms, extending its reach across the city. Construction kicked off in 2022 and is expected to be completed by 2028, heralding a new era of accessible transit solutions for Edmontonians.
Excited to learn more about upcoming construction activities along the Valley Line West? Spring has sprung and it’s a busy season for our construction crews! Marigold Infrastructure Partners (MIP) is eager to keep the West Edmonton community in the loop about changes and improvements.
Heads-up for Meadowlark Road & 87 Avenue Closure:
Beginning around May 1, 2025, a temporary closure will affect the north portion of Meadowlark Road at 87 Avenue for around 10 weeks to facilitate essential underground utility installations along with the addition of permanent fixtures like streetlights. Here’s what to expect:
- Meadowlark Road (between 87 Avenue and 88A Avenue) will be closed to vehicles.
- One lane of east-west traffic will remain open on 87 Avenue.
- Pedestrian access on the west side of 87 Avenue will be restricted—please follow the detour signs.
While some construction noise and increased vehicle traffic can be expected, MIP crews will work hard to minimize disruptions.
