Carbon Monoxide Awareness Week – Tips From The Edmonton Fire Rescue Services
Carbon Monoxide Awareness Week runs from November 1 – 7, 2023. This odorless and colorless gas is a result of the incomplete combustion of fuels. At this time of year, the weather is becoming colder and we are turning to heating appliances to keep our homes warm. Be aware of the symptoms of carbon monoxide poisoning:
- Dizziness
- Headache
- Nausea
- Fatigue
- Burning eyes
- Vomiting
- Loss of muscle control
Make sure your home has working carbon monoxide and smoke alarms:
- Test both smoke alarms and carbon monoxide (CO) alarms monthly to ensure they are working properly.
- Replace batteries at least once a year; never remove the batteries or disable alarms. Daylight Savings Time ends on November 6 – this is a perfect time to replace your batteries!
- Check for the “replace by date” as both alarms have a lifespan and need to be replaced once they have expired.
- Follow all manufacturer specific installation and use instructions.
- Dust each alarm regularly to help them receive the best signal.
- Using interconnected alarms is always recommended so that everyone in the building has the best chance of early detection and escape.
