VOLUNTEER SPOTLIGHT
At WE Seniors, we’re fortunate to have an incredible group of people you’ve likely met, spoken with, or received help from at one time or another — our volunteers. We thought you might enjoy learning a little more about them: what inspired them to volunteer with us, what brought them here, and the experiences they’ve had as part of our community.
This month, we feature our front desk volunteer Janet Heaps. Janet has been volunteering at WE Seniors since September of 2020. You will not find a kinder, more empathetic person. She will always listen and find a way to solve a problem with a smile. We feel so fortunate that Janet chose WSAC to give her time to so we sat down with her to ask her to share a little more about herself. Here’s what she said.
Janet Heaps – Front Desk Volunteer
What do you think are your three greatest strengths?
I listen well, am interested in what people have to say and stay calm.
If you could have any superpower, which one would you choose?
I don’t feel the need for a superpower – I love life as it is – maybe staying curious and thinking beyond what is current.
What made you want to volunteer at Westend Seniors Activity Centre?
My daughter passed away so I wanted to do something that would get me out of the house. I started attending drop-ins at the centre then found myself helping others in classes, so I pursued volunteer opportunities.
What is your proudest accomplishment?
Apart from my family, I got a diploma in physio at university in 1961. Then rules changed in 1980 which required a bachelor’s degree. I technically did not have to go back but decided if students under me had to then I should too. I went back to school at age 40 and got my bachelor’s degree.
What’s one thing most people don’t know about you?
I was part of the synchronized swimming team at university – even won a trophy! I was born in England, bounced around Canada in 10 different cities until the age of 18. It taught me to be adaptable.
What did you do before retiring?
Worked as a physiotherapist for 44 years mainly in geriatrics and continuing care. Before retiring, I worked as Manager of Safety and Claims.
Why do you think people should consider volunteering in general?
It gives you the opportunity to reach out and share your skills with people. And also the pleasure you get from helping others.
