How To Get Up By Yourself After A Fall
If you have a fall:
- Lie still a minute.
- Stay calm.
- Check yourself for injuries.
- If you feel any discomfort or are unable to get up, call for help.
- Call out for help if you think you can be heard.
- If you have an emergency call device or telephone at hand, use it.
- If you don’t, try to slide yourself towards a telephone or a place where you will be heard.
- Make noise with your cane or another object to attract attention.
- Wait for help in the most comfortable position for you.
- If you can, place a pillow under your head and cover yourself with a piece of clothing or a blanket to stay warm.
- Try to move your joints to ease circulation and prevent stiffness.

- Roll onto your side, and then push up onto your elbows.
- Use your arms to push yourself onto your hands and knees.
- Crawl towards a very stable piece of furniture (a sturdy chair or bed) and hold onto it for support.
- Slide or raise the foot of your stronger leg forward so it’s flat on the floor.
- Lean forward and push up using your arms and front leg, slowly rising to a standing position.
- Turn around and sit down. Sit for a minute or two and catch your breath.
