Plan Ahead For Winter

Are You Winter Ready? Preparing for an Alberta Winter

As the temperatures begin to drop and the days get shorter, it is time to start thinking about preparing for winter in Alberta. Snow, ice, and freezing temperatures can create challenges, especially for older adults who want to remain safe and independent in their homes.

Taking a few steps now can help you stay safe, warm, and comfortable throughout the winter months.

Your Winter-Ready Checklist

1. Prepare Your Home

  • Check that your furnace is working properly and arrange maintenance if needed.
  • Replace furnace filters as recommended and check smoke and carbon monoxide detectors.
  • Keep extra blankets, warm clothing, flashlights, and batteries on hand in case of a power outage.
  • Check windows and doors for drafts and keep your home at a comfortable temperature.

2. Get Ready for Snow and Ice

  • Arrange for snow removal before the first major snowfall.
  • Keep sidewalks, steps, and driveways clear of snow and ice to reduce the risk of falls.
  • Use ice melt or sand where appropriate to improve traction.
  • Wear sturdy winter footwear with good grip, and take your time when walking outdoors.
  • Consider asking a family member, friend, or neighbour to check in after a snowfall.

3. Stock Up on Essentials

  • Keep enough groceries, medications, and household supplies on hand in case severe weather makes it difficult to get out.
  • Have a plan for getting to medical appointments, grocery stores, and other essential destinations.
  • Keep important phone numbers easily accessible.

4. Stay Connected

Winter weather can make it more difficult to get out and visit others. Make plans to stay connected with family, friends, and neighbours through regular phone calls, visits, or community activities. If you need assistance, reach out before a small concern becomes a bigger problem.

Need Help with Snow Removal?

Snow removal can become a challenge as we age, particularly when shovelling is physically demanding or creates a risk of falling. If you are unable to manage snow removal on your own, you do not have to navigate the process alone.

The WE Seniors Outreach Department can help you explore available community resources and access information about snow removal services through the Hello Seniors Home Supports Program.

Contact our Outreach team to discuss your needs and learn about available options.

Don’t wait until the snow arrives! Planning ahead can help you enjoy a safer, more comfortable winter and remain independent in your home.
