MUNICIPAL CANDIDATES FORUM

Nicky Gocua

for City Council in Ward Nakota Isga

I am Nicky Gocuan, and I am committed to making Nakota Isga a prosperous community. My goals are to restore public safety and security, ensure responsible use of taxpayer funds, and address the specific needs of our community. Join me in building a better Edmonton — one that honors and respects its citizens, supports businesses, and fosters lasting positive change.

My platform is built on the values of collaboration, inclusiveness, and innovation. I am committed to addressing critical issues through practical solutions and forward-thinking strategies. Check out my plans to create a thriving and united community for all.

Enhancing Public Safety

While Recent statistics show a 7.2% decrease in Edmonton’s overall crime rate in 2023, violent crime has risen in the same period. This underscores the need for targeted strategies to address this alarming issue. I pledge to collaborate with all levels of government to implement sustainable solutions that ensure that our streets, public transit, and communities are safe for everyone.

Fiscal Responsibility and Efficient Services

The City of Edmonton’s operating budget for 2024 stands at $3.48 billion, with the property tax set to jump by 6.1% in 2025. It is critical that we manage these funds well. I am committed to operating within a balanced budget, ensuring that every dollar is spent wisely. By reducing red tape and embracing technological advancements, we can deliver core services—such as Transit service, snow removal, and garbage collection—more efficiently and promptly.

Supporting Our Seniors

Our seniors deserve the privilege to live comfortably within their communities. I will work alongside local businesses and community organizations to develop programs that help those on fixed incomes to maximize their resources and, ensuring that they can continue to live with dignity and independence.

A Vision for the Future

By fostering a culture of openness and innovation, we can propel Ward Nakota Isga to new heights. Let’s unite to create a safer, more efficient, and compassionate community for all residents.

Together, we can build a brighter future for Ward Nakota Isga and the entire city of Edmonton.

Stephen Hammerschmidt

for City Council in Ward O-day‘min

My name is Stephen Hammerschmidt, and I’m committed to making Edmonton City Centre a safer, more prosperous place for everyone.

As your candidate for city councillor, my primary focus will be on a return to safety and security – that is job #1. We cannot achieve any of our goals, such as growth and vibrancy, without first having safe streets, safe communities, and a safe LRT.  Our community deserves to feel secure in their neighborhoods, which is why I am committed to decentralizing social agencies and shelters out of the downtown core.

As your councilor, it is my duty to ensure a balanced budget that respects the tax revenue available and not to continue to expect the citizens to pay more and more of their hard-earned money. At the same time, I believe in fiscal responsibility—prioritizing essential services without raising taxes unnecessarily. By carefully and thoughtfully reviewing the city’s budget (line by line if need be) to ensure that the allocating resources are showing benefit to the people

I aim to create a safer Edmonton that respects our taxpayers’ needs. Together, we can build a thriving, secure community for all. Safety and security are more than just buzzwords—they are a promise. Within my first 100 days as a councillor, I will:

  • Prevent social agencies from being located near schools, churches, or playgrounds.
  • Relocate large shelters from downtown to smaller, more manageable facilities.

These changes will make our streets safer for everyone while ensuring shelter providers can offer better support to those in need.

Thu Parmar

for City Council in Ward Sipiwiyiniwak.

I’m Thu Parmar, and I’m proud to be running as your candidate for City Council in Ward sipiwiyiniwak.

My story is one of community and service to others. Born in a refugee camp in Thailand after my family left Vietnam in the 80s, we landed in Edmonton in December when I was one month old. In this city, my parents became entrepreneurs, built our family business, and quickly discovered a vibrant community and place to call home.

A proud Edmontonian, I’m ready to bring that community-centered approach to City Council. I’m a neighbour, wife, parent (and sports mom!), experienced leader, and someone who loves this city deeply.

As a pharmacist and healthcare advocate for over 21 years, I’ve served residents in community drug stores, worked to make new medicines accessible to Albertans, and pushed for better public policy. Leading teams as a vice president with the Canadian Red Cross, I spearheaded community programs to help the vulnerable and created effective disaster response strategies.

I believe strong leadership starts with strong communities. And strong communities start with vibrant neighbourhoods.  I served as president of the Cameron Heights Community League, leading and fundraising over $2.5 million to build a local spray park, outdoor skating rink, and community hall. As the West Edmonton District Representative on the Edmonton Federation of Community Leagues, I worked for years to address issues like funding, social isolation and building capacity. This work keeps me focused on basics and foundations:

  • keeping our neighbourhoods safe,
  • using our tax dollars wisely, and
  • restoring trust between residents and City Hall.

I believe in balanced budgets, transparent leadership, and practical solutions that reflect the real needs of this ward.

My whole life, this city has shown me the power of local people coming together to build something better. I’m running for City Council because I believe our city needs leaders who listen, build strong relationships. and put community first. Someone who cares. I’m ready to listen, ready to lead, and ready to advocate for a stronger, safer, and more connected Ward sipiwiyiniwak — together with you.

Throwback to our past Older, Bolder Better events

It is a fantastic day for seniors, local businesses, non-profit organizations, and The Westend Seniors Activity Centre (WSAC) to celebrate!

WSAC staff and volunteers were on hand to greet everyone as they arrived and help them find their way around the centre!  We are so fortunate to have our army of volunteers that help us here at our centre.  And it really does take an army of volunteers to host an event like Older, Bolder, Better!

OPENING CEREMONIES AND GUEST SPEAKERS

Each year we bring in wonderful guest speakers and it is always a packed house!

LOTS TO SEE AND DO!

The event always features over 50 businesses and non-profit organizations.  We hear time and time again from many of the attendees that they are thrilled to be able to get the kind of information that the vendors had available to them and our Photo Booth is always a big hit!

LOTS OF CHANCES TO WIN

The event also features a 50/50 sale and there are lots of door prizes from our sponsors are up for grabs

BOB LAYTON, POPCICLES, AND EVEN MORE!

NOW Radio arrives every year to hand to hand out popsicles to all of our guests.  In 2023, our featured entertainment was Radio and TV personality Bob Layton and it was a full house that enjoyed his presentation and talk about his days with 630 Ched.

LOTS OF VENDORS

All of the main areas of our centre are filled with businesses and non profit organizations providing fantastic resources to attendees

IT IS A FANTASTIC WAY TO SPEND A DAY…COME JOIN US!

Seniors from all over come to this event, with many travelling from outside Edmonton to join us for the day.   Chef Stu and his team always do an incredible job preparing the food for our business mixer the evening before, the meals for our vendor, and offering lunch to the attendees.  We also have our social media gurus Strong Coffee Marketing on hand to host our Facebook Live interviews featuring some of our sponsors.
