The meeting was a continuation of the June 5 meeting to further discuss the preservation and storage for retaining old photographs in their original/best condition. Instruction was provided on the types of storage holders best used for preserving photographs (acid-free plastic sleeves and boxes), as well as how to best label pictures. In addition, discussion around storing films, VHS, Cassettes was given. Discussion was presented also on the storage of family history documents and photos/films on ‘the cloud’ for future reference and retrieval. A half hour allotment was provided for members to share their family photos and seek advice on restoration/preservation.

‘Forever’ – a permanent place to store and share digital memories in the cloud.  Presenter:   Ellen Thompson-JenningsPresentation on the ‘Forever’ system – a permanent cloud storage that combines modern digital technology and financial tools with cutting edge legal protections to create a permanent digital home that will last for many generations. The goal of ‘Forever’ is to help users preserve their family history memories and share their stories and research for generations.

Ukrainian Settlement on the Prairies. A presentation on the settlement on the Canadian Prairies from 1890 to the 1950s of Ukrainian immigrants.  Presenter:   Jars Balan, Coordinator of Ukrainian-Canadian studies with the Canadian Institute of Ukrainian Studies, University of Alberta. The presentation looks at the history of Ukrainian settlement on the Canadian Prairies beginning in the late 19th century through to the post-World War II years. Seen as the most ideal immigrants to farm the challenges of the Canadian Prairie, thousands of Ukrainians came to Canada under the Canadian Government’s Prairie Settlement initiative. Mr. Balan will discuss the process of attracting Ukrainians to Canada, their journey by trains and ocean vessels to make their way to their land grant on the prairies, and the challenges they faced in making their home in Canada. Several Albertans claim Ukrainian heritage which has added a rich, cultural element to the settlement of western Canada. 
4. Wednesday December 4. 24 Sharing Family Stories and Photographs  Presenters:     Members of the WSAC                              Genealogy Group

This meeting will see members of the WSAC Genealogy Group make a brief presentation on a chosen member or family event that is of significance to them.  Members are asked to submit a photograph of someone from their family’s past who is significant to them and “tell their story” as to why they were selected. Each member will submit a photograph of their selected individual which will be projected for other members to view during their presentation.
