Active Aging Series: GENEALOGY & HISTORIC EDMONTON

On Thursday, October 24, 2024, we hosted our Active Aging Series: Genealogy & Historic Edmonton.  It was a wonderful morning as we learned about the City of Edmonton Archives, the different resources available at the Edmonton Public Library and the Genealogy group hosted at our centre!

As promised, the following is a summary of the resources our presenters told us about with links on how to access the information.

CITY OF EDMONTON ARCHIVES

  • The City of Edmonton Archives is home to the collective memory of the City.  They receive, preserve, and provide access to records that tell the story of Edmonton and the people who live here.
  • The archives contain a variety of documents and materials that can be accessed for research and reference
  • Anyone can access the archives…you do not need a membership
  • Make a research appointment or drop in to learn more about our collection

Local newspapers

  • Edmonton Bulletin, 1880-1951
  • Edmonton Journal, 1903-Present
  • Editions of Strathcona Plaindealer, Edmonton Capital, and other publications

City of Edmonton Government records

  • City departments and offices’ records
  • City bylaws

Maps and blueprints collection

  • Photographs collection
  • Aerial photos

Other records

  • Personal and family records
  • Local organizations and businesses

PRESERVE YOUR RECORDS

You can consider donating your personal records or those of your family. These records provide insight into the individual stories and experiences that make up our larger community.  If you own a business or are part of an organization you can donate the operational records you no longer need on a regular basis.  Your records will help create a picture of life in Edmonton and will be preserved and accessible for future generations.

  • Personal records -Diaries and journals, Scrapbooks, Certificates etc.
  • Family records – Home movies, Photographs, etc.
  • Organization records – Meeting minutes, Newsletters, and communications
  • Business records – Correspondence, Advertisements and promotional material

TELL YOUR STORY!

YOUR KIDS AND GRANDKIDS WANT TO HEAR YOUR STORY

Paul from the WSAC Genealogy group shared this video with us to show us just how important it is to share our story with our loved ones.
