The Book Club meets monthly to explore four books from Clifton Fadiman’s Lifetime Reading Plan—a list of 100 books that “fill our minds with what the greatest writers of the Western Tradition of literature in English have thought, felt, and imagined.” The list includes fiction, non-fiction, and poetry.

Though the reading list is rooted in classic literature, our main goal is to have fun while engaging in meaningful, respectful conversations. Meetings are a chance to enjoy great books, share ideas, and connect with other mature adults who love reading.

How It Works

  • Monthly Meetings: Each session focuses on one selected book from the Lifetime Reading Plan.

  • Book Selection: Members can shortlist and vote on books to read at future meetings.

  • Engaging Discussions: A round-robin process and member presentations introduce each book and author, followed by 3–5 guiding questions to spark conversation.

  • Feedback & Comfort: Members rate the content and process of each meeting to make sure everyone feels comfortable and that group goals are being met.

Support for Readers

We aim to collaborate with the Edmonton Public Library (EPL) so enough copies are available each month.

  • Help is available for anyone new to EPL’s online services, including placing holds, borrowing eBooks, and listening to audiobooks.

  • Other helpful guides include:

    • How to Read a Book by Mortimer J. Adler

    • How to Read Literature Like a Professor by Thomas C. Foster
