STAFF SPOTLIGHT

As our members come and go from our centre, our team members are always working hard to make your experience at the centre the best it can be.  Many of you have likely met or talked to them, but may not have had the chance to properly meet them! For the next while, we will be picking one of our wonderful team members to introduce to our community each month.

Susan Pattenden – Accounting Assistant

What is your role and a typical day?
My role at WESeniors is Accounting Assistant and a typical day is ensuring our daily reconciliations are accurate. I review the daily drop in sheets for accuracy and follow-up on member’s accounts that may be questioned. Did they sign in to the wrong session by mistake and to collect payment if correct. I’m also a volunteer at the front desk, cafe cashier and the potluck hostess. These roles are very rewarding when helping our seniors with programs, lunch and community.

How long have you been with WESeniors?
5 years.

What music plays in your car?
Country. Old country is my favourite as I grew up listening to Marty Robins, Hank Snow etc. My Dad loved country so that’s where my love for it started.

What part of your work do you enjoy most?
I love crunching numbers equally as much as I love volunteering and building community.

What is one project, program, or task you’re especially proud of?
I would have to say being the potluck hostess. When I see the visiting and smiles around the room, knowing that a senior living on their own is not sitting at home alone wondering what they are going to make for dinner. Sharing is caring, whether it be food or your time.

What is something people might be surprised to learn about your position?
I’ve become a detective. When members sign in to the incorrect class or forget to sign in, it’s a search to get the answer.

Hobbies or interests outside of work?
When I’m not spending time with my grandkids I enjoy reading, riding my e-bike ( now that I don’t ride my motorcycle any longer) and playing games on my tablet.

Do you have a favourite memory or fun story from your time with WESeniors that you’d like to share?
The potluck comes to mind when we all showed up with dessert and only one savory dish to share. This always adds to the fun and enjoyment of this event. We had lots of laughs that evening, most likely due to the sugar high.lol

What have you learned from seniors?
That it doesn’t matter how old we get, staying active, healthy and having a positive attitude goes a long way.

If you could master a new skill?
I would like to learn how to 2 step (country dance). I seem to have 2 left feet when I try.

Favorite song or book?
I like any kind of detective story.

Pickleball vs members?
Losing but giving it my all.
