Guest blog post: 9 Tips For Downsizing and Decluttering From Eager Beaver Moving

Decluttering and downsizing can feel overwhelming, but taking it step by step makes it much easier. Here are some practical tips for seniors looking to simplify their living space.

Start Small & Take Your Time

  • Begin with one room at a time, one drawer, or one shelf at a time.
  • Set a manageable goal, like decluttering for 30 minutes a day.

Sort Items Into Categories – Follow the 5-box rule:

  • Keep – Items you use regularly or truly love.  You cannot possibly live without it!
  • Donate – Good condition items that others can use.
  • Gift – These are items that you can give to family or friends.
  • Sell – If interested, sell valuable items online or at garage sales (follow safety tips, or hire a company to provide this service..
  • Discard – Broken or unusable items.

Focus on Sentimental Items Last

  • Declutter less emotional items first (kitchen, tools, clothes, books).
  • Take photos of sentimental items before letting them go.
  • Make a scrapbook or digital album with stories about why they were meaningful.
  • Pass down heirlooms to family and friends who will cherish them.

Reduce Duplicates

  • Do you really need multiple sets of dishes, towels, or tools?
  • Keep the best and donate the rest.

Downsize Furniture

  • Consider smaller, multi-functional furniture to fit your new space.
  • Whether you are buying new or moving existing furniture, make sure to measure the space in your new home first to be sure that it fits.

Digitize Paperwork & Photos

  • Scan important documents and keep digital copies.
  • Organize photos into albums or digitize them for easier storage.

Get Help & Support

  • Family, friends, or professional organizers can help make the process easier.
  • If moving to a retirement residence, a senior relocation service can help with logistics.

Set a Donation Plan

  • Choose a local charity or thrift store for donations.
  • Schedule a pickup for larger items to make things easier.

Keep What Brings You Comfort & Joy

  • Your goal is to create a home that is safe, comfortable, and meaningful.
  • Keep things that truly enhance your daily life.
