Tax Season 2026: Why Filing Matters (Even with Zero Income)

Tax season officially kicked off in late February, and while many of us find it complicated, it is one of the most important dates on the calendar.
Even if you have no income to report, are tax-exempt, or only have modest earnings, filing your annual return is the “key” that unlocks your benefits. The Canada Revenue Agency (CRA) uses your tax return to calculate exactly how much you should receive in credits. Without a current return on file, your payments could be delayed or stopped.

What’s at Stake?

By filing your 2025 return by the April 30, 2026 deadline, you ensure you continue receiving:

  • The NEW Canada Groceries and Essentials Benefit: Formerly the GST/HST credit, this has been increased to help with the rising cost of living.
  • Guaranteed Income Supplement (GIS): Filing ensures this supplement for low-income seniors stays active.
  • Old Age Security (OAS): Keeps your account updated and accurate.
  • Provincial Credits: The Government of Alberta, Seniors Financial Assistance grants are only paid if you file.

Free & Easy Ways to Get Your Taxes Done

You don’t have to navigate the forms alone. There are several free, CRA-approved ways to file:

  1. Free Community Tax Clinics
If you have a modest income and a simple tax situation, community volunteers can do your taxes for you at no cost.
Find a clinic: Search for the “Community Volunteer Income Tax Program (CVITP)” in your area.
Availability: Many clinics offer in-person, drop-off, or virtual appointments.
Want to know about a Community Volunteer Income Tax Program close to you? Contact the Outreach Team at 780 483 1209, ext. 223.
  2. “SimpleFile” by Phone or Digital
Check your mail or your CRA My Account. The CRA often invites seniors with consistent tax situations to use SimpleFile—a service where you can file in minutes over the phone or online by answering a few simple questions.
  3. Certified Free Software
If you are comfortable online, you can use NETFILE-certified software. Many of these programs are free for seniors or those with low-to-modest incomes and will “Auto-fill” your information directly from the CRA.
Tip: Make sure you have all your slips (like T4A, T4A-P, and T5) before you start. If you’re missing a slip, you can often find a digital copy in your CRA My Account.’

Maximize Your Income, Minimize Your Tax

If you are managing a more complex tax profile, consult a professional tax accountant to move beyond basic compliance and into active tax optimization. A tailored strategy can protect your assets and leverage income-shifting opportunities you might otherwise miss.
