Heart & Soul: LET’S KEEP THE MOMENTUM GOING

February may be Heart Health Month, but caring for our hearts doesn’t end when the calendar turns. March is the perfect time to keep moving, stay connected, and take small steps that make a big difference.
Get Moving, Your Way
Staying active is “medicine” for the heart. We offer classes for every comfort level:
- Modified Chair Yoga (Gentle): Ideal for those with mobility or balance challenges. This seated practice includes breathing, stretching, and cool-downs.
- Essentrics for Seniors (Gentle/Moderate): Held at Trinity United Church, this slow-tempo class focuses on reawakening all 650 muscles to improve strength and balance.
Learn more about these options and other fitness WESeniors programs through Weseniors.ca.
Fuel for the Heart
Visit weseniors.ca/Resources/Nutrition to explore our dedicated nutrition section. Whether you are looking for a Black Bean and Pico de Gallo Salsa recipe, tips on managing sodium, or want to try our Frozen Food program, we have the tools to help you eat well on any budget.
Ground Yourself
If you’re feeling overwhelmed by the “winter blues,” try the 5-4-3-2-1 technique:
Acknowledge 5 things you see,
4 you can touch,
3 you hear,
2 you can smell, and
1 you can taste.
It’s a fast, effective way to ease stress and return to the present moment.
The Science of Connection
Research shows that seniors with strong social ties have lower risks of cardiovascular disease. We are reframing Valentine’s Day as “Community Connection Day.” Positive interactions release oxytocin, which helps lower blood pressure. You don’t have to navigate your health journey alone.
Mary’s Story: Mary, a senior connected with WE Seniors, was feeling tired, isolated, and unsure where to start with improving her health. Through outreach support, Mary was connected to community walking programs, nutrition resources, and social activities that fit her comfort level. With encouragement and support, she began taking short daily walks and making small changes to her routine.
Today, Mary shares that she feels more energized, confident, and connected. Most importantly, she feels supported and empowered to take care of her heart, one step at a time.
